Start with the source, not the forum

The only authoritative statement of what a service requires is the service's own current posting or recruitment page. Requirements change, they differ between municipalities, and second-hand advice ages badly. Read the posting itself, write down each requirement, and check the date on the page.

Where a requirement is ambiguous, contact the recruitment office and ask. That is a normal question and asking it does not count against you.

How requirements are usually grouped

• Baseline eligibility: age, legal status, education, licensing.
• Medical certification: resuscitation and responder-level credentials.
• Fire-specific certification: standards-based firefighter training outcomes.
• Physical testing: a separately administered evaluation.
• Assessment stages: written testing, interviews, and screening.

Where common medical certifications fit

Basic Life Support is provider-level resuscitation education for healthcare and emergency personnel. It is typically renewed annually and is often treated as a baseline rather than a differentiator.

First Responder is a professional responder credential covering assessment, medical and trauma response, and team-based care. Emergency Medical Responder is a longer and deeper program at the next level, often used by applicants moving toward paramedic, fire, or clinical field pathways.

Which of these is required, preferred, or simply useful depends entirely on the posting you are answering. Holding a higher credential than required is not automatically an advantage, and it is not a substitute for meeting a requirement that is actually listed.

Keep your certifications current

Expired certification is one of the most avoidable reasons an application stalls. Track expiry dates as soon as you receive each credential, and plan renewals ahead of application windows rather than during them. Keep digital copies of every certificate in one place so you are not searching for them under deadline pressure.
